Travel to Pretoria

The Food Studies Research Network is pleased to provide travel information for your trip to Pretoria, South Africa.

Since Pretoria is a major city in South Africa, the most common way to get there is by air, typically flying into O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. Pretoria is about 45 minutes to 1 hour away from Johannesburg by car or taxi, so the journey is relatively short.

By Air:

  • International Flights: Most international travelers will fly into Johannesburg first. You can book a flight directly to Johannesburg from most major international airports.
  • Domestic Flights: If you’re already in South Africa or other nearby Southern African countries, you can take a domestic flight to Johannesburg and then travel to Pretoria by car, bus, or train.

By Road:

  • From Johannesburg to Pretoria: If you're already in Johannesburg, you can drive to Pretoria via the N1 freeway or take a taxi, Uber, or shuttle. Public buses and minibus taxis are also available, though they may not be as convenient or comfortable as private transport.

By Train:

  • Gautrain: The Gautrain Pretoria Station is located adjacent to the existing Pretoria Main Station. Pretoria Station with its historic Herbert Baker station building is an important landmark in the City and is located close to the Pretoria Central Business District (CBD).

By Bus: There are several intercity bus companies (like Greyhound or Intercape) that run routes from major cities in South Africa to Pretoria.

Uber and other ride sharing services are also available in South Africa.
